Think about it: Jay Electronica (pictured above) is an incredibly talented artist from New Orleans who has definitely found his home (at least sonically) in New York. Doesn't that sound a bit like the great sonic migration of jazz musicians from the South to Harlem back in the twentieth century? Those were the days.

Oh, and for those of you who think that a Jay Electronica-Louis Armstrong comparison is more than just a bit sacrilegious; relax. I'm just happy that another Southern artist has mixed up his style with the New York sound.

2009 Album of the Year: Drake - So Far Gone (mixtape)

"The industry got to get it in gear, cause it's bad when a mixtape is really the album of the year" - Skillz speaking about So Far Gone on his "2009 Rap Up"

I have a friend who thinks "Houstatlantavegas" is an actual city. No really, I do, and I don't know who's to blame. Either the Toronto District Schoolboard really fucked up, or Drake's mixtape So Far Gone had a much bigger impact on her than grade 9 geography.

You can say all you want about the state of Toronto's public school system (how's my grammar?), but So Far Gone is dope. It's the dopest in fact, and in my humble opinion, Drake's third official release is the year's best hip-hop album, even though it's technically very much a mixtape. But that's just one of the many reasons why it deserves 2009's crown. For example:

- It made R&B rap cool.

- It made me enjoy R&B again.

- It made Trey Songz relevant.

- It introduced me to Lykke Li.

- It made me buy the Peter Bjorn and John album because of "Let's Call it Off".

- It made me not give up on Wayne.

- It made me proud(er) to be Canadian.

- It made me wonder how good 808s and Heartbreak could've been if Kanye decided to just produce instead of sing.

- It made me excited for the direction mainstream hip-hop is headed in.

- And ask yourself this: how many casual hip-hop fans ever download a mixtape? Do you really think that the girl down the street has 50 Cent is the Future or any of the We Got it 4 Cheap mixtapes in her iPod? She doesn't, but she probably has So Far Gone.

In the end however, Drake's mixtape proved that quality songwriting is king. It's great if you can rap for days and days, but when it comes down to it, people remember songs.

Hip-hop album of the year, hands down. Hate all you want.

Some New Year's Resolutions for Hip-Hop

Well hello D-Bags. It's that time of year again where we all drag ourselves out of our deep collective Christmas hangovers and dust off our nicest shirts to partake in another overhyped shit show called New Year's Eve.

Unfortunately for all of us, with great debauchery comes great responsibility (ha!), so I've decided to create a realistic and attainable set of goals for 2010, otherwise known as New Year's resolutions.

2009 was a pretty quiet year for hip-hop in the fuckery department. Of course the usual suspects acted out: Kanye was Kanye, Wayne got arrested, sentenced, and a whole slew of girls pregnant, 50 was so disrespectful, and Nas lost...again, but all in all, nothing really disastrous happened (except for that Ri Ri beatdown).

While my own resolutions are far too personal to print on this website (jeez, get that rash checked out already!) I've compiled a small list of practical suggestions for rappers, industry-types and Dr. Dre.

Hip-hop, I hope this is sobering.

1. Never do this:

Fuck Kanye and Taylor Swift, this right here was unconscionable. Her children's children will never live this down.

Notable offenders: Lil Mama, MTV security.

2. Sober the f*ck up

I think we're at the point in hip-hop history where we'll start to see what decades of relentless blunt consumption can do to a person's body and mind. Although the genre has never hidden its love of rich greenery, it's going to get harder and harder for rappers to hide the effects of their heroic levels of weed consumption. Cut back or quit. I did 5 years ago and I'm a much better man for it.

Notable offenders: Lil Wayne (hopefully some state-sponsored sobriety will quell his lust for intoxication), Snoop Dogg (25 years of Cali bud is no joke), Nas (it's hard to pay Kelis and child support when your so lethargic you can't even promote your own album), Gucci Mane (currently in jail for an undisclosed probation violation. I'd bet the farm that it's weed-related).

3. Stop making stupid mistakes (discipline those weed carriers and goons)

Weed carriers and goon squads partake in two important and time-honoured hip-hop traditions: stashing drugs and firearms, and I hope 2010 is the year they return to prominence. The fact that both Wayne and Boosie got pinched for gun and drug possession shows that weed carriers and goons are not keeping up with the stupidity of their rapper bosses.

So here's my advice to all you rappers: either stop being dumb (easier said than done) or get some solid goons (money makes this easy).

To be fair though, there are moments when not even the most loyal weed carrier or goon can save a cocky rapper from himself. When a rapper's hubris levels are so dangerously high, only the shame and scorn from all of society coupled with a jail sentence can bring this type of rapper down to earth.

Take Lil Boosie for example:

When Boosie got booked for some minor drug and gun offences he copped a plea and was gonna probably serve a small fraction of a 2 year bid. While awaiting sentencing, Boosie was placed under house arrest, which he subsequently violated when he made 2009's best worst move and decided to attend to the BET Hip Hop Awards.

Not the Grammys, not the VMAs, not even the BET Awards. He illegally left his house for the fucking BET Hip Hop Awards!

The end result: Boosie's sentence was doubled to 4 years, effectively killing both his career and reputation. If there were a Darwin Awards for hip-hop, Boosie's unexpected appearance that night should win for the next 10 years. No goon, weed carrier, publicist or lawyer can stop that type of stupidity.

Notable offenders: Lil Boosie (dumbest rapper alive for his house arrest debacle), Lil Wayne (a recent drug possession was cleared up when his goons copped to the stash, so there are signs of improvement), Gucci Mane (Dude beat a murder charge but gets a year for violating his probation. Dumb, dumb, dumb).

4. Respect release dates

In a year of minor fuckery, it's the little things that really add up, and if there's one thing that really pissed me off this year it was the genre's blatant disrespect of the album release date. Since this problem has plagued the industry from day one, hip-hop's habitual tardiness has to change for this new decade because it's weakening the culture.

My problem with the always-changing release date is that i
nstead of generating buzz and anticipation for an album, it creates the opposite effect by actually diminishing interest. By the time the album arrives, the project's early hype has been squandered and lost in a slew of press releases announcing its delay. All relevant aspects of the album have faded.

For example: 50 Cent's Before I Self Destruct never had much going for it anyways, but after several "first" singles and date changes, the album landed with a whimper and relegated 50 to hip-hop obscurity. Of course you can't put all of the blame for Fif's brick on scheduling, but it certainly didn't help.

So artists and labels, please don't stand up your listeners anymore. We no longer want to be in an abusive relationship and will go elsewhere (I have nowhere to go). Movies always arrive on time...

Notable offenders: Lupe Fiasco (We Are Lazers? Lazers? Lasers? LupEND? No Xmas day mixtape), 50 Cent (BISD was plagued with release date issues from day one) Lil Wayne (Rebirth is doomed and if it wasn't for that Amazon leak, the project would never have seen the light of day) Birdman (get your story straight about We Are Young Money, Rebirth, and Carter IV)

With that said...

5. For f*ck's sake, please release Detox

I remember the days when the name Dr. Dre was synonymous with banging beats and perfectly mixed tracks, and although Dre's beats remain the pinnacle of mainstream hip-hop production, my respect level for the dude gets lower and lower (see above picture) with every year that goes by without a solid and credible Detox release date.

It's been too long.

Just mix it, master it, and fire it up.

Detox has had a great run as a punchline, but enough is enough. Drop the damn thing.

Notable offenders: Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, anyone signed to Interscope, Jay-Z (for hogging studio time with Dre for the mediocre Kingdom Come).

Amazon Leaks Lil Wayne's Rebirth

This type of situation is to be expected when you change release dates more than your shoes.

The good folks at Amazon.com leaked Lil Wayne's latest album on Monday when they accidentally shipped out 500 copies of Rebirth, an album that has a February 1st release date.

According to Billboard, about a million copies of Wayne's latest record were pressed and a third of them were shipped out to retailers. Once the release date changed, the stores were ordered to ship the albums back to Universal, but not before 500 copies took flight from the Amazon warehouses to a home near you.

Check your local torrent sites if you can't wait til February.

Lil Wayne featuring Eminem - Drop The World

After watching "The Carter" documentary I deleted all of my Wayne music. I always knew Weezy was a delusional egotistical martian, but that film was the final nail in the coffin for my tolerance of his fuckery.

After several weeks of a Weezy-free lifestyle, my day to day experiences improved ten-fold, until I saw this track. Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in.

The sad thing about all of this is that this tune isn't bad at all, and Wayne and Em prove to be a potent lyrical combination. Wayne's chorus is surprisingly catchy and very, ahem, "rock and roll".

I suppose it's nice to see Wayne get what he's always wanted: a legitimate rock track and a collabo with Eminem. Hopefully Slim's lyrical massacre will teach Wayne some humility.

Oh Eminem, when will you stop murdering people on their own shit?

The mixtape game hasn't seen such a buzz since 50 and G-Unit forced the industry to take notice of them with their aggressive content and street presence. But while 50 and his crew's run is pretty much over, the mixtape gods have crowned a new king who turned his buzz into a multi-million dollar record deal, international stardom and a couple of Grammy nominations. Shit, even if only a dozen people picked this joint up it still deserves consideration as one of the best releases of the year.

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...Pt II

It's a common adage both in film and music that a sequel can never live up to the genius of the original, but Rae (and Ghost of course) really brought it all to the table with this joint. Baton Rouge rapper Lil Boosie was sentenced to 4 years in prison after violating the conditions of his probation. Boosie, who was originally facing 2 years for a drug and gun charge, had his sentenced doubled for repeatedly violating the terms of his house arrest. What a moron! I remember hearing Boosie say he was pulling in $25,000 a weekend just from shows, and now he's thrown it all away on some bullshit. I don't care if you're saving a kitten from a tree, don't leave your house when you got that ankle monitor on!

As dumb as this story is, Boosie is not the real criminal here. Kind of.

Don't get me wrong, Boosie should definitely get some time for illegally possessing a firearm. I don't fuck with guns, and I'm a strong advocate of gun control and mandatory minimums on gun crimes. Just register that shit dude, it takes like 8 days, or at least get a thorough goon squad who are either willing to carry and throw down, or cop to the gun charge once the cops pull you over. But I digress.

The real criminal in this situation are drug laws in the state of Louisiana.

Boosie got busted for blazing some weed in his whip. He was facing 20 years on the drug charge so he had to enter a plea. 20 years! For some dro? America, (Southern states especially) your drug laws are backwards, crule and unusual. If there's a place where you can do more time for possessing a non-addictive, therapeutic plant than a fucking handgun, it's time to re-evaluate societies priorities.

So, to all of the legislators and law enforcement in the State of Louisiana: open your fucking eyes! And if the state of Louisiana doesn't change their policies after reading this, rappers: register your guns and hire a weed carrier!

I'm not gonna say "free Boosie" cause of the illegal gun, but surely dismiss the drug charges against him as they are both draconian and oppressive.

Jay sported a Jason mask during his Halloween show at the Air Canada Centre in SarcasticDBag headquarters (Toronto) on Saturday.

His Halloween costume deserves attention for its lackluster effort and poor execution, but that's irrelevant. What I'm curious about are the two Jesus pieces that Jay is rocking around his neck.

I never understood where exactly Jay stood on the topic of his religious affiliation or his faith and in the grander scheme of things, it really doesn't matter. But damn, I'd love to know.

Usually, when there's a Jesus piece or a cross on someone's neck it's pretty obvious where they stand on the whole monotheism thing. But Jay has said some contradictory stuff in his rhymes on the topic of religion.

Remember when he dropped that "9/11 Freestyle" where he said something along the lines of:

"And no I'm not a Christian though I believe in god, but I don't believe in the devil my beliefs are odd/ if we the people was given free will from god, how could he give you free will without giving you evil?"

Who knows?

Even though this song blows, I really respect Lupe's hustle.

Not only has he provided the hip-hop community with classic mixtapes and albums, but he's also managed to make what I assume is a very decent living off of his more mainstream tunes. I wonder what the publishing cheque looked like when he licensed "Superstar" to NBC's 2008 Olympic coverage?

Anyways, Lupe teamed up with the Twilight people and recorded a song for the New Moon soundtrack after getting a private screening of the new film. I've never seen Twilight, and from what I've heard it involves no sex and no violence. I'll stick to True Blood for my vampire fiction.

I can't be mad at this however, because it ensures that Lu will get that cheddar and has all the comfort he needs to record album after album of high quality hip-hop.

On a different note, Lupe not only wrote the tune, but he produced it himself.

It shows.

What I mean by that is that Lupe has a secret desire to be a rock star (just check out his side project Japanese Cartoon) and that desire is definitely reflected in this song's sound and structure. As for rappers turned rockers: Lupe needs to practice, but he's far from the worst.

Known for their incredibly harsh and ultra-critical (read pretentious) reviews, the site had the common sense to give Jay-Z's 2001 masterpiece The Blueprint the number 5 spot.
